Untitled 2007 by Basil Damer, oil on panel, 91.5 x 124cm Two people, two very different approaches to making art - one abstract painter, one figurative printmaker. This exhibition of contrasts brought together the large colourful abstract paintings of Basil Damer and the richly detailed monochrome landscape etchings of Andrew Smith. Damer's work, produced over many years (he is in his 80s), owes much to the American abstract painters of the 1950s, while Smith's is firmly rooted in the English landscape tradition. What the artists share is a passion for picture making and a strong belief in the resonance of images. |
