The work of Cardiff's prize-winning painter Emrys Williams was on show between 28 July - 21 August 2008. Williams was this year's winner of the painting prize at the 'Welsh Artist of the Year' exhibition at St. David's Hall, while last year he won first prize at the University of Glamorgan Purchase Prize Exhibition.

Williams, who was born in Liverpool in 1958 and now lives in Cardiff, is not a newcomer to Bath, he was a regular exhibitor at Six Chapel Row Contemporary Art in the 1990s. Followers of his work will recognise his light, warm, sunny palette and his highly individual vision of people, objects and the landscape.

He says, "my recent work has focused on objects normally associated with 'the outside' which are displaced and represented in an interior setting, a 'mise en scene', more like a mental space than any perceived view."

Recently artist in residence at the Welsh National Opera and then at Dalkey Heritage Centre, Dalkey, Dublin, Williams is currently enjoying a sabbatical from teaching thanks to a Creative Wales Award from the Arts Council of Wales, giving him the chance to paint full-time.
