This was the first joint exhibition of paintings by Ian Potts and William Packer, two pivotal personalities of the English art world over the last thirty-five years. Potts, for many years head of Fine Art at Brighton Polytechnic and Packer, until recently principal art critic of The Financial Times, have always thought of themselves first and foremost as painters.

Friends since the early 1960s when Packer was one of Potts' first students at Brighton Polytechnic, their work shows their continuing fascination with painting, with light, form and space, with paint on paper and canvas.

The lyrical landscape paintings of Ian Potts will be familiar to many in Bath. His large confident watercolours featured in a number of exhibitions at Six Chapel Row Contemporary Art. The oil paintings of William Packer are less well known, although he first showed at the Royal Academy in 1963 and has shown in many group exhibitions over the years in Bath and in London. Packer has lately concentrated on still life, painting with the delicacy of brushwork and composition that has long been his trademark.
