John Wragg is known and thought of as a sculptor, but he has painted all his life. In fact it was suggested he should study painting at Art School, but something contrary in his nature made him take what he perceived to be the more difficult path, that of a sculptor and his talent and tenacity made sure he succeeded: he won the first ever Sainsbury Award for Sculpture in 1960. 50 years later and now in his 70s Wragg is painting with enthusiasm and excitement, as if he can finally do what he always really wanted to, that is to paint. His first ever solo exhibition of paintings opened at the Chapel Row Gallery, Bath on 15 May. With 15 recent paintings and a small number of drawings this marked an important moment in Wragg’s life as an artist. He says: ‘the thread that holds the history of my work seems to be an endless preoccupation with the frailness and vulnerability of the human condition’. As this exhibition opened at the Chapel Row Gallery, Wragg elected RA in 1986, was busy hanging two rooms in the Summer Exhibition at the Royal Academy with Ann Christopher. His responsibility is sculpture, but he sent this year, as he did last year, paintings and not sculpture to the exhibition.
