Richard Lane, 'Hooray' (detail), oil on canvas, 2007

An exhibition of new work by father and son Richard and Andrew Lane, painter and furniture designer, respectively.

Artist and painter Richard, who, after taking a law degree at Oxford, went to the Slade in the early 1950s. He previously exhibited widely across the country. His work is in private collections in the UK, USA and Europe.

Andrew originally studied fine art in the 1980s before specialising in furniture design at Rycotewood. His work includes interior design as well as furniture design and manufacture. He undertakes both commercial and private commissions as well as exhibiting widely across the UK.

Artist/painter Richard says: “My aim has always been to express the heightened state of awareness that comes when a particular light, object or view causes a jolt to one's consciousness. I have recently found it necessary to go beyond the representation of natural appearances. The abstract qualities of pure colours, one reacting with and vivifying another, are very similar in their effect on one to music and lead, I find, to a kind of purity of pleasure which itself induces a keener self-awareness and, at times, a moment of deeper understanding and insight, even a moment of wonder.”

Designer/maker Andrew says: “Designing furniture as a process is what fascinates me. The need to continually investigate and push the technical possibilities of materials opens up ideas. Wood has the ability to be static or moving as a sculptural form and the ergonomic demands of furniture impose restrictions related to the human form. My work strives to balance function with beauty through proportion and line.”
